Hi, I'm new to IPCOP, so I'm gonna start with a few questions. I've bought an Velociraptor 1100 on ebay thinking it was a working firewall, but it seems that it is only the hardware. So I decided to have a look at IPCOP.

Anyway, here goes:

1) What kind of thruput can I expect on a VR1000, assuming normal SPI firewall functionality?
2) What addons are recommended?
3) If I install a proxy, will that affect my overall thruput for let's say FTP-transfers?
4) My needs are as follows: SPI firewall, a proxy+authentication for my "public" WLAN, authentication for services in the DMZ, antivirus, email and messenger application-level filtering. Is this possible, and what would the recommended addons be?
5) Can IPCOP server as a syslog server for my backend?
6) Can I somehow make use of larger disks than20GB? For proxy-data or.. anything?

Oh sorry, what speed is the 1100 clocked at? That will have some effect. Also none of us has maxed out one of these units since we all have connections below 50mbs, way below. Some addons will drop the max throughput. The thing you really have to watch is memory, snort uses over 90MB per monitored interface, proxy will use a bit if it can and addons may also tax it. These units can take a gig of ram using the latest flashrom which you need to run IPCop anyway because of ext3 support and the 2.4 and newer kernel.

Main Daily Firewall: Cobalt Raq 4i modded to use a low voltage K6-III 1.8v 256k cache 500mhz clocked at 550mhz, VFD display. Raqcop 1.4.21

Others: One additional 4i for development left stock and two Symantec Velociraptor 500's with the 550mhz low voltage processor mod. Raq550, Two Raq XTR units

What spec should the memory be?
