Hi,

I recently got an AMD K6-III+ 400 which I wanted to put in my Qube3 in order to save some electrical power and to decrease the case temperature. But now, the Qube wont boot anymore. It detects the processor and it goes until
Code:
First stage kernel (Linux): Decompressing - done
ERROR: cannot relocate with filesize 0

then it hangs. Is there anything I can do?

Thanks in advance

What speed did the Qube come with? Did you resolder any jumpers? What is the core voltage of the old processor and what is supposed to be the core of the new one? As it is, you're not even booting the rom kernel so the OS on the drive is irrelevant at this stage. The last error you see is normal and inherent in even a good running one.

None of the Gen III Cobalts draw a very noticeable amount of power. The power supply is 50 watts and they usually draw a minority of that.

Hi,

the original processor has 450 MHz, the new one 400. Since i dind't resoldered the multiplicator jumpers, it is now slightly overclocked to 450 MHz (which schould not be a problem because those processors are known to be very good to overclock). The core voltage of the new processor is 1.6V (it's a low voltage version), the original one needs 2.0V. I changed this by removing one bridge from the MB (actually i replaced it by a switch, so I can now choose beween 1.6 and 2V) but it doesn't change anything. Since the AM K6-2+ and the K6-III+ are more or less the same processors and only differ in the size of the L2 cache, I don't understand why the replacement doesn't work

Did you do a cmos reset after changing processors?

No, I didn't. How can I do this? Just by taking out the CMOS-battery for a short time?

Hold the E button down while powering up and watch the lcd, it will tell you that the cmos is reset. I've had to do this at times with changes such as upping the ram to 1GB.

OK, I resetted the CMOS, but it didn't change anything. Some more ideas?
