Any ideas?  Every reboot results in a Kernel Panic unless I babysit it and get into the ROM to set it manually.  This is on a 3i.  I'm guessing the root parameter isn't set to hda4 but I could be wrong.

First and most important is, are you using the latest ext3 flash rom? How are you setting it? Through the button menu holding the S button while powering on or the nullmodem serial console method? The reason I ask is that the lcd wording is a bit misleading, when the lcd says set boot partition, it really means the root partition whereas in the console you can set both to their respective values and root and boot really mean exactly that. Of course this all assumes you have the latest ext3 rom and you really are saving the settings. If you really screw it up, you can set the rom to the default values and then set it again after that by holding the E button down while powering on. One of my raptors wouldn't show on a serial console during the boot process so I reset it and with the lcd buttons, set boot to hda4, saved and booted.

Newest ROM from the sourceforge site IIRC. 2.10.3 I believe. And I'm using a serial cable.

It works fine if I go into the ROM and manually set the root and boot partitions.  Then a bfd and it goes right in.  The vmdk with winimage worked perfectly btw.  But if I power cycle the Raq it reverts to something other than root=hda4 and boot=hda1 and it kernel panics because it can't find the partition where it thinks it should.

It's not a big deal as long as I don't lose power.  If that happens I have to power cycle it again, get into the ROM, fix the settings and then bfd.

This is damaging the wife acceptance factor.  Smiley

Something is totally wrong with the rom if this happens, usually, settings are saved on the flashrom itself. Might want to reflash and try again after trying a reset FIRST. Did doing a reset by holding down the E button and then setting hda4 after that help? I have never seen this happen on any of my raqs or velociraptors including xtr and 550. Things that make us go hmmmm.
